Our Story

Johannes Kunst 1938-2017
Celebrating the life-long artist and well known figure in the West Coast and European art circles.
Johannes began to express his creativity as a photojournalist early in life. Living in the Netherlands, his work was exhibited worldwide. As his imagination grew, he segued his creativity into graphic art, unique furniture design, sculpting, and eventually, into the world of the many mediums of canvas and paper.
Appreciation for Johannes art expanded quickly. Showings at the In-Line in Belgium, the Shell Company in Amsterdam, and the Jaabeurs in Holland, quickly brought interest and expanded his art to Beverly Hills, CA at the Cornsky Gallery. He became a member of the Dutch Artist Tour and began exhibiting art throughout the West Coast.
Johannes paintings and drawings have been described as work that bridges style and technique influence by a full range of European Modernism and American Abstraction. His involvement included participating in the California scene of pop, funk, and color where his influences included Stuart Davis, Frank Stella, and the cartoonish figures of Carl Steinberg and Keith Haring.
Johannes art sometimes tells stories of his traumatic childhood during World War II. His work continued to evolve as time past and each decade his uses of color, form, space, scale, and spirit transpired through each piece. Through the years he began to cherish the process of his work and chose a quieter life with his family. However, his portfolio grew into an amazing collection from a Master of his craft. His style has been described as being "tempered by a sense of whimsy and imagination and draws viewers into the fantastical world that is both visually captivating and intellectually engaging"
Johannes past away in 2017 and has left a stunning collection of his paintings. His wife of 60 years, Harmanna Kunst, made a promise to him to share his work and has embraced his collection with a goal to showcase it to the Art Community.
